Why 4 minutes of meditation?

After my mother passed away, my therapist encouraged me to meditate regularly.

I committed to meditating every single day for four minutes for two weeks.

“If nothing changes in two weeks I will stop,” I told myself.

One and a half weeks into the daily meditation practice, I was teaching art to a class of first graders and one young boy was having a tantrum.

Instead of addressing him with words, I stood next to him. I positioned by body to be a few feet from him, while facing the entire class who was at their group tables doing their art project.

With my eyes still open I began meditating.

I imagined I was breathing in and out the energy of love, which was the meditation I was practicing at home.

One of the alpha students in the class looked at me with a surprised and a slightly nervous expression. When he saw that I was standing calmly, he returned to working on his art project. The rest of the students followed suit.

Within a few moments, I felt a wave of energy rush through my room making it feel like a sea of love.

It was palpable.

The young boy who was throwing a tantrum suddenly fell quiet. It was as though every student in that class was energetically supporting the angry child. The young boy who had been yelling was began crying softly.

That was a moment I recognized the power of meditation.

I realized in that moment I was meant to be facilitating that practice even more than creating art.

Since that day I haven’t gone more than a few days without meditating in the morning or evening. The practice continues to help me tremendously and is the reason I am teaching it today!

I hope these guided meditations remind you more closely of who you really are at your core and what you are capable of experiencing during this lifetime.

Med Painting #2.jpg

This is a copy of a Henri Matisse painting. The original is in Philadelphia, PA. This copy is in a hostel in Cali, Colombia.

This is Elena, sitting at the table at the Yoga village in Goa, India. I met Elena at a hostel, but realized shortly after arriving there, it was not where I wanted to stay. She told me about the Yoga Village which was nearby, where I ended up staying for a few weeks. There, I met Kash, who is from California. After speaking Spanish with each other, we realized we had mutual friends who own a yoga studio in Medellin, Colombia. I mentioned doing reiki on them and he said,
"What?! YOU'RE the reiki healer?! I heard about you!! He told me about that experience the second time we hung out."

I drew this while sitting at a restaurant in Goa, India.

I painted a different version of this Picasso painting on a large piece of plywood that hung in my childhood bedroom. One day I decided to paint over it and when my mother came home she was disappointed. "I loved that painting! I used to look at it every time I'd come up the stairs and I'd see it in your bedroom!" I painted her this painting on a canvas as a replacement copy, though it wasn't quite the same.

This was the beginning of a mural painted I painted my friend's baby's bedroom wall. <3

Meditation #52 : Transformation

My friend's mom gave me four beautiful blazers. I feel like a Queen every time I wear one. This was the cover of the “thank you" note.

Meditation #57: Spiritual Connection

This is a watercolor cover of a wedding card for my friends, inspired by the Gramercy Hotel, where they had their first date.. I think.

This is a drawing of a large temple in Hampi, India. Sometimes I draw, which relaxes me and then I'm able to articulate ideas through words more clearly, hence the desire to brainstorm and journal on the same page.

#60 : Grounding + Strength

Years ago my dad gave me this little Buddha statue. I stored it in a box, unsure of what to do with it.. A few years ago I found it and it's been on my alter ever since. I painted this postcard for my friend's mom as a "thank you".

I painted this while living in Brooklyn, NY, when I was still teaching elementary school art. The window was in my apartment but everything else was from my mind.
